Will Pressure Washing Damage My Cedar Shake Siding?

Cedar shake is a soft wood. So no, do not put a pressure wand on cedar shake. But "do not pressure wash cedar" is not the same thing as "do not clean cedar" — and that's where homeowners get confused.

What Cedar Shake Actually Needs

2. Apply, Dwell, Rinse

The mix goes on through a low-pressure pump — think garden-hose pressure. It dwells 10–20 minutes depending on growth load and ambient temperature. The growth visibly changes color (algae blanches, mildew goes brown then dissolves). We then rinse with a fan tip from the ground at low pressure, top down, working in sections so nothing dries.

3. Post-Rinse the Landscape

Myth 1: "Higher pressure means cleaner."

On cedar, higher pressure means more damage. The biology lives on the surface and goes away when you kill it, not when you blast it. Pressure with no chemical only displaces the visible portion of the colony; it's back within 6–12 weeks. Chemistry kills it for 18–30 months.

Myth 2: "Pressure washing strips the stain — I'll just get it cleaned and re-stained."

Stripping stain with pressure leaves a furred, uneven surface that the new stain will not lay down on smoothly. The right sequence is: clean (soft wash), then if you're also re-staining, the painter sands lightly and re-stains a clean surface. Skipping the clean and going straight to a pressure-strip costs you sanding labor on the back end.

Myth 3: "Bleach kills my plants."

Sodium hypochlorite at the dilution used in soft washing is far weaker than the concentration in your laundry. It also breaks down to salt and water within minutes of being rinsed. Plant damage from soft washing almost always traces back to a contractor who skipped the pre-soak and post-rinse, not to the chemistry itself.

When to Clean vs. When to Refinish
